The olive tree had more to give

The trace was charcoal. At Tel Tsaf, a prehistoric village in the Jordan Valley, researchers found the remains of olive wood among the material left by people who lived there about 7,000 years ago. Wild olive trees didn’t naturally grow in that part of the valley. The researchers concluded that people had brought them there and planted them.

There’s something familiar in that decision. Planting a fruit tree means making room for a harvest that lies ahead. For those early households, olives added food and oil to a diet built around crops such as cereals and legumes. Oil could be stored, and olives could be cured. A harvest could remain useful long after the picking was finished.1

The leaf has a different history. Around the Mediterranean, it also entered folk medicine. By the early nineteenth century, Spanish physicians were using olive leaves in preparations intended to bring down fever. In 1854, the Pharmaceutical Journal carried an account by Daniel Hanbury describing an olive-leaf preparation he had encountered years earlier. People were looking for relief in a tree already woven into everyday life.

Those accounts tell us what people used and hoped would help; they don’t establish that olive leaf was an effective fever treatment. What they left behind was a question about the leaf itself. Researchers later isolated one of its bitter compounds and named it oleuropein. A familiar plant could now be studied through something specific inside it.2

That name appears on our Olive Leaf label today. Each capsule contains 750 mg of leaf extract, standardized to contain 150 mg of oleuropein. It’s a modern preparation with a declared concentration, different from the leaves used in old household remedies.3

The olive tree is still our starting point. Looking beyond its fruit brings another part of its history into view: the leaves that people noticed, used and eventually began to understand in a new way.
